Why Use Our Average Calculator?
Mean & Median
Calculates both the arithmetic mean (average) and the median — the two most common measures of central tendency.
Min & Max
Instantly identifies the smallest and largest values in your dataset alongside the average.
Enter Key Support
Add numbers quickly by pressing Enter — no need to reach for the mouse between entries.
Decimals & Negatives
Supports any integer, decimal, or negative number. Results update automatically after each entry.
How to Calculate an Average
- 1
Type a Number
Enter any integer or decimal in the input field — for example
42or3.14. - 2
Add It to the List
Press Enter or click the Add button. The number appears as a badge in the dataset display.
- 3
Continue Adding Numbers
Repeat for each number in your dataset. There is no limit on how many you can enter.
- 4
Read the Results
The mean, median, min, and max update automatically. Click Reset to clear all values and start over.
Statistics Reference
| Statistic | Definition | Example | Best For |
|---|---|---|---|
| Mean (Average) | Sum of all values divided by the count | (10 + 20 + 30) ÷ 3 = 20 | Symmetric datasets without extreme outliers |
| Median | Middle value when numbers are sorted | 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 → median = 3 | Datasets with outliers (e.g., income, house prices) |
| Minimum | The smallest value in the dataset | 1, 5, 9, 14 → min = 1 | Finding the lower bound of your data |
| Maximum | The largest value in the dataset | 1, 5, 9, 14 → max = 14 | Finding the upper bound of your data |
| Range | Maximum minus minimum | 14 − 1 = 13 | Measuring the spread of your dataset |

Frequently Asked Questions
What is the difference between mean and median?▼
The mean is the sum of all values divided by the count. The median is the middle value when numbers are sorted — for an even count, it is the average of the two middle values. The median is less affected by extreme outliers than the mean.
How do I calculate the average of a set of numbers?▼
Add all the numbers together, then divide the sum by how many numbers there are. For example, the average of 10, 20, and 30 is (10 + 20 + 30) / 3 = 20.
When should I use median instead of mean?▼
Use the median when your dataset contains extreme outliers that would skew the mean. For example, household income data uses the median because a few very high earners pull the mean upward and make it unrepresentative.
Can I enter decimal numbers?▼
Yes. The calculator accepts any valid integer or decimal number such as 3.14, -7.5, or 100. Negative numbers are supported as well.
What do minimum and maximum tell me?▼
The minimum is the smallest number in your dataset; the maximum is the largest. Together they define the range (max minus min), which tells you how spread out your values are.
How many numbers can I add?▼
There is no fixed limit. Add as many numbers as you need. Use the Reset button to clear all values and start a new calculation.
